Let’s come at this in a different direction. Do you clean out your car? Change the oil? Refill the washer fluid? Wash your car? Put gas in your car? Monthly maintenance?
So you care for your car regularly — right?

What’s the difference between your car and your computer? They both have electrical components. They both need to be refueled, whether its gas or electricity.
They both have moving parts. Yes, you type on your keyboard keys. They move regularly, and if you have a SATA hard drive, it spins. You use them both regularly. Do you eat or drink in your car? Do you eat or drink while at your computer?
Your computer needs the same love that you give your car. Below is a list of things you should do weekly, monthly, and yearly.
Weekly
- Virus Scan (this can be a quick scan)
- Malware and Spyware Scans
Monthly
- Full Virus Scan (this is a deep dive)
- Back up all documents
- Back up your phone to your computer so it is included in the back up
- Back up your photos too
- Clean up of docs you don’t need them
- Check for software/app updates
- Clean up your Downloads Folder
- Clean up your Desktop
Yearly
- Remove apps/software you don’t use
- Review what apps your paying for and remove ones you don’t use
- Check the space on your hard drive
- Check your drives for errors
- Optimize and Defragment your Drives
- Change your password (I recommend doing this more often if this is a work computer)
